Immediately after he tells us about the coming of the Holy Spirit and Peter’s preaching to the people, Luke writes, The disciples began to celebrate the Eucharist very soon after Pentecost. What provoked the disciples to begin celebrating a meal in memory of Jesus is a ‘missing link’ in the history of the Eucharist in the early Church. Perhaps after the coming of the Holy Spirit, one of the disciples was inspired with the memory of Jesus’ instruction at the Last Supper, and said to the others, “Do you remember that when we had that last meal on the night he was betrayed, after he broke the bread and blessed the cup, he said, ‘Do this in memory of me’? Come on, let’s do it.” When he revealed himself in the ‘breaking of bread’ to the two disciples at Emmaus (Luke 24:13–35) and when he provided a barbecued breakfast of bread and fish for the disciples on the shores of Lake Galilee (John 21:1–14), perhaps he was teaching them in a very visual way that when they had a meal in memory of him, then he would be with them as the Risen One. The Last Supper was probably a rather bewildering event for the disciples and there was little time to reflect on it as it was followed immediately by his betrayal, suffering and death. I like to think Jesus was teaching them that when they had a meal together to remember him – then he was with them as the risen Christ. The disciples were devastated at the death of Jesus but were greatly comforted and encouraged by his appearances after his resurrection when he ate and drank with them. How do you think the Eucharist might have been celebrated in the early Church? The Beginning In our calculations, we use the former method. Before reading this chapter, share with your friends what you already know about the changes that have been made in celebrating the Eucharist in your lifetime. The confusion comes from the uneven number of days in different months. Similar situations exist for dates like Apr. 31 as the end of the month, then the result is one month. 28 to be one month, then the result is one month and 3 days. However, there are two ways to calculate the age from Feb. In some situations, the months and day result of this age calculator may be confusing, especially when the starting date is the end of a month. For example, if one baby is born just one day before the Traditional Chinese New Year, 2 days later, the baby will be 2 even though he/she is only 2 days old. In one of the traditional Chinese age systems, people are born at age 1 and their age increases up at the Traditional Chinese New Year rather than their birthday. For example, a person who is twenty years old is the same age as another person who is in their twenty-first year of life. In some cultures, age is expressed by counting years with or without including the current year. Most western countries use this age system. For example, the age of a person who has lived for 3 years and 11 months is 3, and their age will increase to 4 on their next birthday one month later. In this system, age increases on a person's birthday. This calculator is based on the most common age system. The age of a person can be counted differently in different cultures.
